Cymraeg ~ Welsh

Llandeilo, a bilingual town in carmarthenshire

Cymraeg ~ Welsh is one of the oldest surviving languages in Europe. It is barely related to English, being a Brythonic Celtic tongue. Breton and Cornish are its two sister languages. For the past thousand years, Welsh has been under pressure from the use of English and on this tour we will look at how it still survives in parts of Mid Wales. We will meet first language Welsh speakers, investigate the lingusitic divide that lies across Mid Wales and discuss the future of minority languages in the face of the globalization of English. Our tour will circumnavigate the Cambrian Mountains ~ Elenydd, the so-called "Empty Heart of Wales". Not only will we study the use of language, we'll enjoy the beautiful scenery of the unspoilt Welsh hills.
