20th August - Stonehenge and Avebury

Tim, also from Portland, Oregon joined Rob today for a visit to the neolithic sites at Stonehenge and Avebury in Wiltshire. During his brief stay in Hereford, Tim wanted a bespoke (tailor-made) visit that allowed him to maximise his time on his single day off work. All went wel but one question remains over both site..."Why?"

12th - 13th August - an exploration of Herefordshire

Jonqhuil, an Oregonian sculptor, joined her friends Marilyn and Jim, over here on an extended stay in Bath for a weekend exploring the beautiful border county of Herefordshire. Inspired by the works of Phil Rickman, we set out to explore some of the many locations that feature in the Rev. Merrily novels. Brinsop church and court, once the home of Dorothy Wordsworth, the "Black and White" villages of Weobley and Dilwyn and the evocative church of St Comas and St Damian filled our morning.

Eardisland, arguably the county's most picturesque village, provided a lunch stop and then it was off to Hay-on-Wye, that bibliopile's paradise.

The Pandy Inn, Dorstone provided us with a splendid dinner with the day being rounded off at Arthur's Stone, a neolithic burial chamber, where we watched the sun sink behind the dark line of the Black Mountains.

Sunday saw us head south, initially to the intriguingly beautiful church at Kilpeck. Ross-on-Wye, Goodrich Castle and Yat Rock presented us with coffee, history and beauty respectively as we toured down the stunning lower Wye valley. Our day culminated at Tintern Abbey, much beloved by the eighteenth century visitors in search of the "picturesque". For sculptor Jonqhuil, she had had a tailor made experience that brought together her literary and artistic loves into one memorable day..exploring Herefordshire!
