Wye Valley Walk 3 - Rhayader to Llanwrthwl
24th February - A gorgeous day, the sunniest since 2nd October 2015! I took this chance to walk just 6 miles of the Wye Valley Walk along with a short section of cycling along "Lon Las Cymru", National Cycle Route 8. Rhayader, an attractive market town looked gorgeous in the bright winter sunshine. In fact there were many signs of Spring as the hedgerows and woods were resounding to bird song. Linnet, woodpecker, fieldfare, buzzard, red kite, starling and robin were among the active birds establishing territory and beginning the search for a mate. The pictures will speak for themselves but I wanted to mention St Gwrthwl's Church, Llanwrthwl, which is beautiful and so welcoming that tea making facilities for visitors are provided!
Blaen y Glyn waterfalls, Talybont-on-Usk
23rd February - Another sunny day so we did a "gentle on-road cycle tour" from Pencelli, along the Usk valley to Aber. We cycled gently alongside Talybont Reservoir to the impressive Blaen-y-Glyn Falls. Unfortunately, i forgot the camera! We returned for a warming soup at the Talybont Cafe and a drink at the Usk Inn!
Brecon Beacons northern ridges - Cribyn and Pen Y Fan
18th February - A last (?) chance to climb in snow, we abandoned our plans for The Black Mountains and headed back to the Brecon Beacons for a superb mountain walk. We did a horseshoe of Cwm Sere, climbing the Bryn Teg ridge, culminating in an airy and icy 400 foot climb up the sharp peak of Cribyn. This was followed by a climb up Pen Y Fan, which was crowded with half term walkers, mostly coming up from Pont-ar-Daf / Storey Arms. We took the steep north ridge, down the Cefn Cwm Llwch ridge.
Wye Valley Walk 2 Llanwrthwl - Builth Wells
16th February - The second part of our re-walk of the beautiful Wye Valley Walk. Today we walked down the valley on a cold but sunny day 12 miles to the market town of Builth, followed by a quick road cycle back to the car. For our Wye Valley Walk page click here.
Snowy Black Mountains
11th February - a quick stroll and bird watch up at Brechfa Pool - a Breckock Wildlife Trust reserve. Fantastic 360 degree views. Click here for more information on Brechfa Pool.
Winter in the Beacons
10th February - had a quick climb up Pen Y Fan via Cefn Cwm Llwch - the mountain's north ridge. Light snow cover until the final hundred foot which was heavily iced and proved "interesting"!
